The Skyview Atlanta Ferris Wheel is finally open. The 200-foot high Ferris Wheel opened to a large crowd that was very excited to be one of the first to get a ride.
The opening of Skyview Atlanta kicked off with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at noon on Tuesday. Following the ribbon cutting, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and City Council members got to take the first official ride on the new attraction, the Associated Press reports.
Visitors were very excited about the new Atlanta attraction. Some even camped out as early as 7 a.m. to be one of the first to ride.
Maintenance crews spent the morning making final security checks on the ride and taking it on test runs in preparation for the opening.
The new ride is locate on Lucky Street in Atlanta. Since it is so large, a whole last only consists of four revolutions, which takes about 15 minutes to complete.
The 20-story Ferris Wheel has 42 gondolas which can hold up to six people each. There is also a special VIP gondola which features an all-leather interior with a glass floor, to offer the best view, but any gondola offers a breathtaking view of the city.
A ride starts at $13.50 ($14.45, including tax) for adults, $8.50 ($9.10,
including tax) for children and $12.15 for military ($13, including tax). Each gondola must have an adult riding with children. Children under 2 can ride free. The VIP gondola comes with its own prices.
The ride will be open almost every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Hours are extended on Saturday nights.
While the ride is new to Atlanta, it isn't a new attraction. The wheel was previously in Paris and in Pensacola, Fla.
