Several cruise passengers got the boot by Royal Caribbean. The cruise line had to tell passengers in 78 staterooms that they would not be able to sail on the July 12 sailing that they booked.
Royal Caribbean had to reaccomodate passengers that were supposed to sail on Grandeur of the Seas, which experienced an onboard fire in late May. The cruise line blames unfinished repairs as the reason that passengers had to be booted. Crew members still need to stay on board to finish the repairs, Cruise Critic reports.
"In the past weeks, Grandeur of the Seas staff and crew and many others have worked tirelessly to restore the onboard spaces that were affected by a fire in May," Harry Liu, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Cruise Critic.
"Every member of Grandeur of the Seas' staff and crew demonstrated a heroic response that night and has since been dedicated to bringing the ship back into service."
"We unfortunately had to re-accommodate some guests on the July 12 cruise to later sailings so that additional needed workers may stay onboard in order to complete these remaining tasks as quickly as possible."
As compensation, the passengers who were supposed to go on the July 12 cruise will receive a full refund and will also get a 25 percent credit towards a future cruise.
The ship was on a seven-night trip from Baltimore, Maryland when a fire broke out. Several areas of the Grandeur of the Seas, including cabins were damaged by the fire that occurred on deck 3 on May 27. There were no serious injuries reported. Passengers had to be flown back home to the U.S. from Freeport, Bahamas, where the ship was dry docked.
The cause of the fire on Grandeur of the Seas has not yet been determined. The Bahamas Maritime Authority is currently drafting a final report on the incident. The ship is currently in Baltimore, getting ready for its first sailing.
