It's Free Slurpee Day 2013 and this year, the freebie is bigger than usual. Lucky for us, there are several 7-Eleven locations around the country where you can go get your delicious frozen drink.
July 11 marks 7-Eleven's unofficial birthday and today it's in its 86th year. Free Slurpee Day has been celebrated since the chain's 75th birthday in 2002. Typically the nation's largest convenience store chain had given away 7.11 ounce Slurpees for the occasion, but for this year's Free Slurpee Day, they're handing out 12-ounch Slurpees, which is a 42 percent increase from previous eyars.
Laura Gordon, 7-Eleven's vice president of marketing and brand innovation, estimates that the chain will give away about 7 million Slurpees on Thursday worth an estimated $7.6 million. "It helps us reconnect with people who love the Slurpee," she said according to USA Today.
One of the main reasons for the size increase is to reduce messes. "Moms asked us for cups with lids," says Gordon, and unlike the 7.11-ounce cups, the conventional, 12-ounce Slurpees come with lids. "That means less mess in the car."
The promotion is done every summer as a way to say thank you to customers. It's also used as a way to get people to come to the store. "It's Slurpee's biggest marketing tool," Gordon says. "It reminds people about Slurpee - but thanks them at the same time."
Some people aren't satisfied with a small Slurpee, so they'll buy a larger size. Overall Slurpee sales are expected to jump by 40 percent this Thursday, even though the promotion is going on. Chips, beef jerky and hot dogs are also big sellers on this day.
The promotion is on 7/11/13 only and runs from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
