An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crashed at San Francisco's airport on Saturday. The flight from Seoul crashed as it landed. Two people have been confirmed dead and more than 180 others were injured.
There were 307 people on board the flight when it crashed, including 16 crew members. According to officials, 123 people escaped without injury but another 181 were hospitalized. Dozens of terrified passengers and crew members had to escape the aircraft before it went up in smoke and flames, USA Today reports.
Of those that are injured, 49 are in serious condition and five at San Francisco General Hospital remain in critical condition. Of the 47 others at the hospital, several were treated for minor injuries. Their injuries included fractures and abrasions and many were released by Saturday night.
One of the victims was Vedpa Signh. She broke her collarbone. "It was all over in 10 seconds," Singh, told USA Today. "We heard a big bang, and it was over."
The San Mateo County coroner confirmed that the two dead passengers were females, NBC News reports. Their names have not yet been released.
The cause of the crash hasn't been determined and it could take years to come to a final conclusion. FBI officials factored out terrorism. When the plane landed, it appeared to touch down tail-first and fell short of the runway. Part of the tail section that fell off was several hundred feat away from the main body of the aircraft and other debris was scattered around the runway. According to passengers, the aircraft was shaking out of control before the crash landing.
The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched investigators. It is still unclear if pilot error was the cause of the crash. We have not determined what the focus of this investigation is yet,'' NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman told USA Today. "We will be looking at everything. Everything is on the table at this point."
