New York: Places to Beat the Heat With Great Indoor Activities

New York can be very hot and humid in the summer, which can make for some sweaty sightseeing. However, there are many places to visit during the hottest part of the day where you can avoid the worst heat and stay cool and refreshed.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The MoMA is an art museum in midtown Manhattan that features modern art. It includes works of architechture and design, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, books, film and electronic media. The museum includes works from well-known artists, such as Jackson Pollack. Some of the summer exhibits include Ellsworth Kelly and Bill Brandt.

Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)

The MET was founded in 1870 "to be located in the City of New York, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining in said city a Museum and library of art, of encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts, and the application of arts to manufacture and practical life, of advancing the general knowledge of kindred subjects, and, to that end, of furnishing popular instruction," according to the museums' charter.

The museum has Greek and Roman art, Egyptian art, medieval art, arms and armor, Islamic art, American art and art from the east. There is also a special exhibit running until August 11, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, which was the theme of this year's annual MET ball.

American Museum of Natural History

This museum is one of the largest and most celebrated museums in the world, with 45 permanent exhibition halls that house over 32 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites and human cultural artifacts. For movie fans, it's also the setting of the 2006 film "Night at the Museum."

The mission statement of the museum is "to discover, interpret, and disseminate - through scientific research and education - knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe."

There are also many activities and exhibits for children. The museum is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, directly across the street from Central Park.
