Death Valley Temps: Sweltering Temperatures Tie Record

Death Valley temps are so high that they've tied a record. Several Western states are being impacted by a heat wave which has left locals dealing with sweltering conditions in Death Valley and Las Vegas.

On Sunday, the temperature hit 128 degrees n Death Valley National Park, the National Weather Service said. This was high enough to tie the record for the hottest June day anywhere in the Unite States. Yet the Los Angeles Times recorded the temperature at 129.9, which would break the record, the Associated Press reports.

Some tourists, such as Dan Kail, was actually excited about the record temperatures.

"Coming to Death Valley in the summertime has always been on the top of my bucket list," the 67-year-old Pittsburgh man told the Daily News. "When I found out it might set a record I rented a car and drove straight over. If it goes above 130 I will have something to brag about."

Las Vegas is also being hit with high temperatures as it hit 117 degrees, which tied the city's record. Temperatures have only reached 117 in Las Vegas twice before on July 19, 2005, and July 24, 1942, National Weather Service records show.

The overall record high for Death Valley is set at 134 degrees on July 10, 1913. This is the highest temperature ever recorded on the planet.

Other parts of the country are also seeing high temperatures. Phoenix was struck by tragedy after hot winds fueled a wildfire that claimed the life of 19 firefighters in Yarnell. A temperature of 119 degrees was recorded in Phoenix on Saturday, which was the fourth highest temperature ever recorded in the city. Temperatures are expected to drop over the next few days as strong storms approach the area.

In Palm Springs, California, the temperature hit 122 degrees. In Northern California, Redding hit 110, Sacramento reached 107 and Fresno saw 109.
