Orlando's biggest theme park is already planning for Halloween, with the announcement of the first of the year's lineup of haunted houses for Halloween Horror Nights 23, according to FOX News. Beginning in September, visitors to Universal Studios Orlando will have the opportunity to walk into the world of "The Cabin In the Woods," the 2012 horror film written by Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon.
Goddard lives near Universal Studios in Los Angeles, and said that he's a long time fan of the Horror Nights events. He said that during filming, they discussed the possibility of their film coming to life as a haunted house.
"It was certainly always the dream," Goddard said. "I don't know how far we thought the reality would go.
"But we always wanted 'Cabin' to take on a life beyond us," Goddard continued. "It just felt like such a rich universe where people can drop in and have their own fun."
The haunted house will bring visitors inside the cabin, but it's nothing like a vacation cabin. In fact, there won't be any relaxation.
"Things start going to hell pretty fast," Mike Aiello, the creative director of Halloween Horror Nights told FOX News. He describes the experience as a "chronological retelling of the film from beginning to relative end - minus the gods destroying the Earth."
They have changed the setup from the film's approach of the perspective of unsuspecting college kids getting sucked into a terrifying situation to give guests the role of new hires at the film's "facility," where they will be in the place of the characters that were pulling the strings in the film.
The first scene is "calm and serene" according to Aiello. Then, guests will encounter zombies before escaping into the secret surveillance facility where an outbreak of hellish creatures causes all-out chaos, coming one step short of global annihilation.
"The minute I saw the movie in theaters, I knew it was perfect for Halloween Horror Nights," Aiello said. "It has every ingredient we want in a maze."
Goddard and Whedon, who is best known for creating the television series "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," wrote the film as an opportunity to do something new with the horror genre. They wanted to combine satire and dark humor with over-the-top blood and gore. Many of the unusual creatures from the film will come to life in the maze.
Goddard even plans to dress up in costume and scare fans.
"I wouldn't miss it," he said. "I'm too excited by it." Whedon is also very pleased after seeing the concepts. "He couldn't be more excited."
The event will run on select nights from September 20 through November 2.
