A Pacifica shark attack has California residents on edge. A kayaker was attacked by a great white shark on Pacifica State Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pacifica Police Department received a report that a man who was fishing from his kayak off the beach was attacked by a shark at around 4:55 p.m, CBS reports.
A great white shark attacked a kayaker fishing with his father-in-law off Pacifica State Beach near Linda Mar Tuesday afternoon. The attack took place outside an area that is visited by surfers and swimmers.
Kayaker Micah Flanaburg was uninjured and was able to recall the incident.
"As I'm looking back, trying to figure out what the hell is going on, he came up straight underneath me...and the whole kayak was probably lifted out of the water," kayaker Micah Flanaburg told KPIX 5. "And as it grabbed a hold of me, it started shaking the boat front to back. And it wouldn't let go."
The animal bit Flanaburg's kayak and then circled it before swimming off.
"Probably the scariest part was when it let go, 'cause it swam back around and I thought he was going to come and take another bite, right where my legs were," Flanaburg recalled.
Flanaburg believes the attack lasted no more than 10 seconds, but it felt longer as it was traumatizing.
"Right from below me, the whole kayak lifted up from below me, and the great white shark grabbed the whole front of the kayak and was shaking it violently. He hit me so hard from underneath," he said.
Flanaburg was with his father-in-law, Ross Weber when the attack took place. He said it was "about 100 to 200 yards off that point...not too far from shore."
Neither Flanaburg or Webber were physically hurt and they were able to return to shore without further incident.
Flanaburg believes the great white was about 12 feet long and three-quarters the length of his boat. "I was pretty much helpless, just hanging on for dear life," he said.
Authorities are keeping watch of the beach and the Pacifica Public Works is planning to put up warning signs.
Most shark attacks occur between July and November in California. This is the second shark attack in the state in the last week. Another swimmer was attacked by a shark at Surfside Beach. The young swimmer was injured but was able to fight off the shark.
