$1.2 Million Stolen From a Plane to New York

The FBI is trying to figure out how $1.2 million in cash went missing from a plane recently. The loot was taken from a cargo container of a Swiss Air Lines jet that landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday.

"When it got here, the money was missing," FBI spokesman Jim Margolin told ABC.

There is evidence that the money may have been taken before it even got on the flight as police and investigators found that the cargo container was not tampered with. It could have been stolen before it made it to New York City.

A Port Authority official confirmed that the incident occurred, but said that it was "an active investigation." New York airport agency had no further comment, ABC reports.

The airline said they couldn't give any more details either. Due to ongoing investigations, we cannot give any confirmation or comment," Swiss Air Lines spokeswoman Susanne Mühlemann told ABC.

It is not clear which flight the money was supposed to arrive on. The airline would not specify, but there Swiss Air Lines only runs three flights to JFK daily. One is from Geneva while the others are from Zurich.

Whether the money was taken at the airport or not, this isn't the first time JFK airport was at the center of a heist. It was a long history of robberies. The most well-known was the 1978 Lufthansa heist which was made famous by Martin Scorsese's 1990 film "Goodfellas."

Just three months ago, detectives were able to stop a long-running operation in which thousands of packages were stolen as they passed though Kennedy Airport's huge U.S. Postal Service mail-processing facilities.

Back in November, someone was able to pull off a massive iPad mini heist. The thieves used an elaborate scheme to get their hands on about 3,600 iPad minis which had just arrived at JFK airport from China and were set to be shipped around the U.S.
