Twinkies are not dead yet. The beloved golden, crème filled cake is coming back to shelves on July 15 along with other tasty Hostess treats.
Daren Metropoulos, principal of Metropoulos & Co. announced this week that Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, Donettes, Zingers, fruit pies, mini muffins and Cupcakes will be back. Metropoulos is one of the two companies that bought the rights to Twinkies and other snack brands after Hostess went bankrupt earlier this year. Apollo Global Management is the other company that bought the Hostess names for $410 million. Both companies have experience with grocery items as Apollo owns Car's Jr. parent company, CKE Restaurants Inc. and Metropulos owns the beer company Pabst Brewing Co, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Twinkies may be under new ownership, but they won't look very different. The new box will look very similar to the old one and will have the slogan "The sweetest comeback in the history of ever." The price isn't changing either. The product will be sold at $3.99 for a box of 10, which is the same price they were before Hostess shut down. The other snack products will also have the same pricing as before.
"America wanted Hostess back -- they wanted the original," Metropoulos told CNN.
While most of the old products will be back on shelves by July 15, some products, such as Sno Balls, will take a little longer. However they will be back within the next few months. Other Hostess products such as Wonder Bread and Drake's snack cakes were sold to other companies. No details have been released about their return yet.
None of the products have been in production since November, when Hostess Brands Inc. filed for bankruptcy and liquidated the 82-year-old business. A large Bakery Workers Union strike was the last straw for the troubled company before it closed. As a result, most of the company's 18,500 employees lost their jobs.
