Princeton University was evacuated on Tuesday morning after "a bomb threat to multiple unspecified campus buildings," according to the university web site.
Police declined to give details but confirmed to CNN that the university was being evacuated.
"Please evacuate the campus and all university offices immediately and go home unless otherwise directed by your supervisor," the university web site said. "Do not return to campus for any reason unless otherwise advised."
Regular university classes are over for the semester, and commencement was held last week, so most students have already left campus for the summer. Students still on campus were looking for places to stay until it was safe to return to campus, according to Brianna Gagnon, at the Yankee Doodle Tap Room. Over two-dozen students had congregated at the bar.
"There are not a lot of kids on campus for the summer, but everybody who's there is being told to leave campus," Jeff, a man at the Ivy Inn bar, told CNN.
Local police referred all questions to the university, which is updating students through the school's web site.
The latest update said that law enforcement officials are inspecting university buildings with bomb-sniffing dogs. The search was expected to take several hours and no estimate was given as to when the campus would reopen.
"The University takes all threats to the safety and well being of our community members and visitors seriously and is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations," the web site stated.
A spokesman for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said that the governor was not in Princeton, which is the location of the executive mansion, Drumthwacket.
This incident is the latest in a string of high profile but unrelated bomb threats that have occurred on Monday and Tuesday throughout the United States. Richmond International Airport was evacuated for three hours on Tuesday morning, three government office buildings near the Georgia Capital building in Atlanta were also evacuated. A plane bound for Texas was diverted to Phoenix on Monday after departing from Los Angeles after a bomb threat.
