According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino, it is believed the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a 28-foot Wellcraft carrying two boaters struck a 36-foot Carrera powerboat with 16 people aboard.
"By all accounts it appears it was kind of a t-bone type of collision," Pino said to The Huffington Post.
One person was airlifted to the hospital and eight were taken via ambulance. Three people are reported to have been injured seriously.
ABC News reported that Pino said the passenger with the most serious injuries appears to have been injured in the leg and a possible concussion.
The crash is under investigation said Pino. He added that authorities are doing field sobriety tests on the drivers to make sure that there was no alcohol involved but he added that "nothing would indicate" that alcohol was a factor.
"Whenever there is an accident on Florida's waterways its incumbent upon both captains of the respective vessels to maintain a proper lookout," Pino said to ABC News.
He said that all who are injured are expected to recover.
"We start to see that the warmer it gets, the more active our waters get. We have thousands and thousands of boaters on the waterways on any given weekend. We want them to enjoy themselves," he said to ABC News."But it's also somewhat concerning because we brace ourselves for something like what happened this Sunday."
