National Donut Day 2013: Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Where to Get Free Donuts

Today, June 7, is National Donut Day. For those that love the sticky, doughy treats it's aday to celebrate. Whether you are a glazed, old fashioned, jelly or cream filled type of person, today is the day to fulfill any of your donut desires.

The Salvation Army established the holiday in 1938 as a fundraiser during the Great Depression and to support and honor the female volunteers who worked with soldiers on the front lines during World War I.

The Dutch first brought donuts to the U.S. with what they called oliekoeckento. "Apparently, holes were not a feature of the original donut and were added later on as a matter of function. The egg yolks in a donut weigh down the pastry and thus the hole makes for a richer, more firm treat," reported The Huffington Post.

Now, in 2013, many national chains are offering free donuts on this amazing day.

Dunkin' Donuts

The East Coast staple will be handing out free donuts with any beverage choice. The popular chain has a variety of donut flavors from standard glazed and old fashioned to strawberry. They also have a selection of breakfast sandwiches including their talked about Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich which makes it debut at Dunkin restaurants today, reported ABC News.

Krispy Kreme

The delicious chain will be giving away a free donut today at participating locations.

Tim Hortons

With any purchase, receive a free donut from this chain today. But be sure to print out the deal from their Facebook page and bring it with you to redeem your sweet treat.

Winn Dixie

For those based in Florida, the supermarket chain is handing out free jumbo donuts today to customers.

Tastykake

The first 5,000 people to like Tastykake on Facebook will get a coupon for a free donut product from the brand, redeemable through June 14.

Entenmann's

In other news, ABC News reported hthat Entenmann's will be donating $1 to the salvation army for every new "Like" they receive on their Facebook page through June 15 with a max of $300,000.
