Spirit Airline will soon serve wine in a can, which has sparked a mixed reaction. Spirit has partnered with Friends Wine In A Can to serve the canned wine product on all flights
Friends Wine In a Can is bringing a fresh way of thinking about wine in a new "Fun Wine" category. This category is defined as delectable wine products in a convenient, environmentally-friendly container with six percent alcohol content.
"As the first airline to offer this new category of wines, we are pleased to roll out Friends Wine In A Can, providing a fun new experience for our customers," said Scott Robillard, senior manager onboard experience for Spirit Airlines in a media release.
It will be available in new flavors such as Friends White and Strawberry Moscatos. The wine in a can may be more convenient for flight purposes.
"We are excited to introduce Friends Wine In A Can as a new 'Fun Wine' category with Spirit Airlines," said Joe Peleg, Friends Wine In A Can CEO. "We believe that great tasting wine can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime, and with Spirit Airlines we are taking wine to the clouds."
According to the Associated Press, "Spirit likes the cans because they are easier to stack and store on airplanes with limited storage space. They also weigh less and airlines are obsessed with making their planes lighter to save on fuel."
While the product may be convenient for the airline, some aren't too thrilled about wine in a can.
"My wine consumption stops at a plastic bottle," Ben Granucci, an aviation enthusiast from New York, told AP. "I just don't want that metallic taste in my mouth."
However, Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza isn't bothered by the criticism. He thinks people will get used to the idea.
"People adapt," Baldanza told AP. "Your choices at 30,000 feet are pretty limited."
