A man committed suicide on the Iroquois John Henry Yacht on Monday. A crew member reportedly killed himself on the boat belonging to Red Sox owner John Henry while the yacht was docked in Boston, the Red Sox and local authorities confirmed.
According to the Associated Press, the crew said they were the only ones on the yacht called Iroquois when they found their fellow crew member dead. The boat was docked at Rowes Wharf near the financial district, which is visited by many locals.
The man who committed suicide was between 28 and 30 years old according to police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca. Firefighters and police were called to the scene. They found the man had gone into cardiac arrest and they tried to revive him but the attempts were not successful.
The identity of the man and details of the suicide were not released. It was not clear who called authorities to the scene.
Police on the case and yacht crew members said that they could not comment on the incident, according to the Associated Press.
"Mr. Henry and the members of the Boston Red Sox are saddened by the news and send deepest condolences to his family," the team said in a statement.
Henry has been the owner of the Red Sox with two major partners since 2002. He used to be the owner of the Florida Marlins. Henry is also the chairman of John W. Henry & Co. Inc., a hedge fund he founded in 1981.
Under Henry's ownership, the Red Sox have won two World Series games. The first win was in 2004 after 84 years of not winning the title.
According to Forbes magazine, in a 2011 article, Henry's 164-foot yacht was for sale for $28 million.
