A new travel app called Waze was the recipient of the Webby Award for "Best Connected" last week, according to BreakingTravelNews.com. The app helps travelers find the best route to drive, and is a great choice right before taking a summer road trip.
The new app takes data from all the users that have it open and uses the information to determine the fastest route to your destination. If there's an accident or other problem with the road on the regular route, as it seems like there's always construction causing a traffic jam somewhere, the app will know about it and reroute you around it.
Another feature it has is the ability to tell you where you can find the cheapest gas. Again, it takes data from other users who have the app and have reported the gas prices. If you have friends or family that have the app, it can track where they are on a map. That way, you know when they'll arrive and you can see that even though they said they were on their way, they haven't left their house yet. It's also useful if your driving somewhere caravan-style and someone gets lost. The app let's you pinpoint them and then you can find them the best route back.
Waze began in Israel in 2006 but is only recently becoming popular due to its ability to save you time and money. It even works internationally, so no matter where you road trip is headed, it has helpful features.
For users concerned about privacy, there is a mode that prevents you from being seen by other drivers, though the app will still be tracking you. Another disadvantage is that is will use a lot of battery power, as all map apps tend to do, though this problem can be solved by plugging the phone into a car charger while traveling.
The app is free through the website.
