Darius Rucker responded to a racist tweet recently which showed that the times may not have changed so much.
Darius Rucker, a former Hootie & The Blowfish member recently covered the Bob Dylan song "Wagon Wheel," which gained some popularity in 2004 when Old Crow Medicine Show released their version. Rucker performed the song at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Many applauded Rucker.
However according to Country Weekly, not everyone liked Rucker's version. On Sunday, a Twitter member, pqkullman, wrote to Rucker and said "@dariusrucker Leave country to the white folk.
The comment angered Rucker as he saw it as very racist.
"WOW," he replied at first, "is this 2013 or 1913."
He then continued, saying "Ill take my grand ole Opry membership and leave your racism. Wow."
He ended the night by tweeting "Gotta go to bed this has been hilarious tonight. If any hater thinks I care what u think. I don't make music for u. So don't listen."
Rucker's reply didn't end on Twitter though. He took to the press to expand on the incident.
He spoke to rollingstone.com about the issue in a story that was released on May 21.
"I was absolutely shocked," he told reporter Rolling Stone Beville Dunkerley. "Sometimes people will say, 'You're not country,' and I know what that means, because they can't be talking about the music. But when somebody says to leave country music to the white folks, that is unbelievable to me. . . . But that's life. That's something that I'm going to have to deal with the rest of my career, because I'm a black guy in country music and there are people who don't like that. But it's not going to make me quit."
Rucker has released a few country albums. His third solo country album, "true Believers" came out on May 21. It includes the song "Wagon Wheel."
