A massive car wreck occurred at Talladega when Kyle Busch hit the back of Kasey Kahne's car, causing a 16-car pile-up on the Superspeedway on Sunday, according to USA Today.
"I was trying to go to the outside of him, but he just moved up in front of me and I wasn't expecting it," Busch said. "I tried to go to the outside of him and before I could get to the outside of him, I got in the back of him.
"I just hate that I caused a hell of a melee for everybody," Busch added. "I hate that."
Other drivers involved in the pile-up include Martin Truex, Jr., Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Marcos Ambrose, Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, David Stremme, Kurt Busch, David Treutimann, Casey Mears, Brian Vickers, Scott Speed, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon.
Most of the drivers were able to continue with the race, though Kahne, Busch and Harvick were sidelined. Biffle walked out of the care center at the track carrying his daughter.
"It can happen at any time," Biffle said. "You just never know.
"We were trying to be cautious, but that didn't work," he continued.
Vickers had just subbed for Denny Hamlin, racing the No. 11 car, after Hamlin left for precautionary reasons.
"The exchange went great," Hamlin said. "That was about as smooth as it could have went for us.
"Everything went well," he added. "I had a checklist in the car with things that I needed to do before I got out to switch over for the next driver."
Moments before Vickers joined the pile-up, Hamlin had discussed his driving as a bonus. As Vickers was able to rejoin the race, there is still a possibility he will earn some points, though possibly as few as seven.
"Anything Brian gets us for points today is strictly a bonus," Hamlin said. "We're going to start next week in Darlington with our hairs on fire."
