Frontier Airlines to Charge Some Customers $100 For Carry On Bags

Another airline has decided to start charging a high fee for carry-on luggage, but they say it's for the customer's benefit.

Frontier Airlines will start charging passengers up to $100 for carry on bags this summer. However not everyone will have to pay the fee. Only passengers who book through travel agents and third-party travel sites will have to pay the carry-on baggage fee. Those who pay in advance will only have to pay $25, the Daily Mail reports.

The airline claims that it's making this change so that passengers won't have such a hard time finding space in overhead bins. However customer who book directly through Frontier's website will not be charged for carry-on bags.

"Frontier's most loyal customers have made it very clear that finding overhead bin space for carry-on bags has become unacceptably difficult," the airline said in a statement, according to the Daily Mail. "In response, Frontier will be introducing a charge for carry-on bags for customers buying Basic fares through third party sites."

The carry-on fee only applies to bags that are placed in overheard bins. Anything that fits beneath the seat like a purse or briefcase, is allowed at no charge.

In addition to this, the low-cost airline will also start charging customer $2 for soda and coffee.

These changes are being done so the airline can boost its revenue. Frontier's parent company, Republic Airways Holdings, is trying to fix the airline's finances so it can be sold.

Frontier's new fees are part of an "unbundling" campaign. This term in the airline industry described offering fewer and fewer services with the price of a ticket.

One of the biggest "unbundling" practices is charging flier to check bags. This is done on most domestic flights now and many international flights.

Frontier, the nation's 12th largest airline, isn't the only airline to charge for carry-on luggage. Spirit Airlines is also charging up to $100 for carry-on bags.
