A May snowstorm is causing trouble in parts of Colorado and Wyoming. You read that correctly. It is snowing on May 1.
A May Day snow storm forced people in Colorado and Wyoming to break out the winter coats and hats for even more snow, the Associated Press reports.
The May Day snow storm cause some travel issues on the roads, particularly on Interstate 70 in Colorado's mountains and along Interstate 80 in southeastern Wyoming but the snow wasn't a big enough issue to close airport. There were some delays due to de-icing.
The snow could get heavy though. About three feet of snow is possible for the mountains in norther Colorado but the lower elevations could get as much as a foot in Wyoming and Colorado. There was a foot of snow in Rocky Mountain National Park by the afternoon and there were power and heat outages in the area and in Cheyenne.
The Midwest was also hit with the late spring snow. For the first time in 37 years, Sioux Falls in South Dakota got a May snowstorm. There was also a winter storm warning in effect for Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Those in Colorado and Wyoming don't mind the snow too much as it adds to the region's water supply. Both state are facing a drought, so every spring snow storm is actually a good thing. Colorado is often susceptible to wildfires due to dry conditions. Unfortunately, the spring snow storms have missed southwestern Colorado, where the wildfires often break out.
Denver is set to get five inches of snow, which means the roads are a bit slippery. After recent 70 degree temperature in the state, the snow wasn't sticking on the roads but it made them messy.
Denver residents had mixed views on the rare snowstorm. Chris Lujan told the AP that he never had to wear a coat, scarf and hat in May, but Gred Notz said he wasn't too surprised.
"I expect this. Yup. It's better than living where it's warm and dry and nice all the time. At least we get a variety," Notz told AP.
Denver get a snowstorm in May every three years. Snow has never been recorded in the state in July and August, which means it has even snowed as late as June before.
