Five were shot at a Crab Festival over the weekend, but the even wasn't your typical Crab Fest.
According to Yahoo, Police were called to the event after there were reports of shots being fired near the City of Williston. The event is labeled as a "Crab Festival" but the annual gathering, which attracted 10,000 people this year, doesn't features booths of crab legs, crab-cakes and other tasty treats.
The event has nothing to do with a typical crab fest. The City of Williston's "Crabfest" is a series of "Hip Hop" style street parties that are unofficially organized. The event is primarily advertised underground through social media sources and it often results in violence.
Roughly 10,000 people came out for the event this year, which would be something to brag about, considering no corporations or government groups back the event. However the violence that results gives the crab fest a bad reputation.
The Levy County Sheriff's Office is well aware of the violence that this event brings, so they tried to prepare for it this year.
"The Levy County Department of Public Safety had pre-staged ambulances and a Medical helicopter in the area for the Festival. The large crowds made it impossible for ambulances to reach the wounded," reads a press release from the Levy County Sheriff's Office. "Despite the large crowds walking and dancing in the roadway, Deputies and EMS personnel were able to evacuate the victims in law enforcement and private vehicles."
The police put out a press release before the event to warn residents that there would be increased traffic and to wish all who were attending a good time.
However the event turned violent as five people were shot, including a 36-year-old man who died.
Police arrested Devonte Tremaine Ocasi, 19, in connection with the shootings. He has been charged for first degree murder, discharge of fire arm with injury, aggravated of assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm. He is being held on a $1.5 million bond. A second shooter may have also been involved.
