Disney is set to have three of its parks open for 24 hours. The change is for a special Memorial Day Weekend event as Disney kicks off a "Monstrous Summer."
The Magic Kingdom Park in Florida and Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park in California will be open from 6 a.m. on May 24 to 6 a.m. on May 25. This is being done for the start of a summer on fun inspired by the the upcoming Disney-Pixar Film, Monsters University.
For the "All-Nighter" event, the sphere of Spaceship Earth was turned into a a 180-foot-tall, fully animated Mike Wazowski, the green-bodied, one-eyed monster from Monsters, Inc.
Walt Disney World President George Kalogridis made the annoucement of the 24-hour event, saying, "This summer, Disney Parks are bursting with a monstrous lineup of new thrills, shows and happenings," said Kalogridis.
"Guests can start Memorial Day Weekend with a 24-hour-marathon of memory-making as three Parks stay open all day and all night to celebrate the bi-coastal kick-off of a Monstrous Summer at Disney Parks."
Disney has a series of special events planned for the three parks during the 24-hour period and the characters Mike and Sulley are sure to make an appearance.
In the Magic Kingdom in Florida, they'll host a "Celebrate a Dream Come True" day parade, with Mike and Sulley as the Grand Marshals. There will be added entertainment throughout the day. Characters will walk around Town Square in their pajamas during the late night and early hours and late-night dance parties will be held near the Cinderella Castle.
Both parks in California will also have special events like a Monsters University "TLT Monstrous" Dance Club and Star Wars characters in Tomorrowland, and late-night Character Pajama Party in Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland. The Fantasy Faire Royal Theater in Disneyland will be transformed into a Royal Dance Hall at night with a live band performing. Disney California Adventure guests can check out the new Monsters University "Dorms" in Hollywood Land and a new Monsters University float leading the Pixar Play Parade.
Limited-edition specialty merchandise will be available for purchase as well as special food and beverage options at all three parks.
