There are certain sights that everyone should see. They are part of the culture and history of being American. A list of the top destinations every American should see was compiled by Budget Travel.
These are the essential sights west of the Mississippi River:
Highway 1, California
The United States has more miles of paved roads, with over 2.5 million, than any other country on Earth. Road trips are an American tradition. One of the most beautiful and rightly famous drives in the U.S. is the 135-miles of California's Pacific Highway 1 that stretches from San Luis Obispo and Monterey. Much of the road is along the side of cliffs, with the ocean right below. There are forests and canyons as well.
French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana
The cobblestone streets of the French Quarter can make you feel lost in time. The district consists almost entirely of Spanish architecture and as you walk along the Mississippi River, you can observe the nightclubs and hear the music from jazz performances. The Creole influence is also all around.
