The glory days of Pan Am flight attendants in crisp blue uniforms serving champagne in first class, directing passengers to safety exits with alacrity, are over: according to CareerCast's 2013 Job Ratings list, of all the careers in the travel industry, flight attendants came last.
High stress, low pay and a disappearing job market all play a factor in this rationale, CareerCast explained.
"As airlines continue to consolidate and reduce staff, this is unlikely to change," they said.
With an overall estimated income of about $38,000, a hiring outlook rate in the negatives and a stressful environment, flight attendant landed the 191 spot out of 200 jobs.
Jobs that were projected to be worse than a flight attendant included lumberjack, actor and newspaper reporter.
Among the five best jobs were actuary, biomedical engineer, (with one of the highest hiring outlook rates of 62.63), and software engineer.
On the whole, travel-related jobs did not appear high on the list. In fact, only "event coordinator" made it above number 100.
