Some spectators at the Moscow circus got a shock when a trapeze artist survived an 85-foot trapeze fall while performing.
Karo Christopher Kazungu, a 23-year-old Kenyan trapeze artist described the incident that occurred last month at a recent news conference in Moscow. He spent three years preparing for his flight, however his routine didn't go so well on March 13. While trying to perform the complicated, risky act, he lost control and fell 85-feet to the ground, the Associated Press reports.
There was a safety net below Kazungu at the time which should have kept him safe, but the net ripped and Kazungu went right through a large hole and fell to the ground.
Miraculously, Kazungu survived the fall, but it wasn't without injury. He suffered from serious injuries including fractured vertebrae. The man was taken right to the hospital for surgery. He was able to make good progress on his recovery.
He attended a press conference on Thursday at the same circus hall where he feel a month before in Moscow.
Kazungu said that he had been "recovering and everything is ok." He thanked the doctors for acting quickly and getting him to a hospital right after the incident.
"Doctors hurried up to take me to the hospital and I thank that they saved my life," Kazungu said.
Kazungu doesn't think he'll return to flying on the trapeze, but he would like to work "like a normal artist" in the future.
The incident was caught on video and posted to YouTube with the description, "A Kenyan trapeze artist who fell to the ground from a height of 85 feet while performing at the Moscow circus last month says he is healing and will eventually return to work."
