Winter may not be over yet. Due to anticipated snowfall, 60 flights have been cancelled at Denver International Airport.
As of 10:45 a.m., DIA cancelled at least 60 flights as Denver is expected to receive up to seven inches of snow, with most of it hitting at midday, the Denver Channel reports.
Many flights that haven't been cancelled are facing delays. The FAA said that the average flight delay time was one hour and 45 minutes for DIA until midnight, according to spokeswoman Laura Coale.
Airlines are spending time de-icing so passengers flying from Denver can expect to spend more time than usual on the plane before it departs.
Snow removal crews are prepared to clear runways, taxiways and various access roads if necessary. The airport is well-prepared for snow as it has more than 250 pieces of snow-removal equipment and over 500 trained snow-removal personnel.
Denver International Airport released a series of tips for passengers who are supposed to fly to or from the airport on Wednesday.
Before leaving for the airport, check the status of your flight by calling the airline or by visiting www.flydenver.com.
If heading to the airport, travelers are advised to drive with caution and to leave early.
DIA says it's best if travelers are inside the airport at least two hours before the flight departure time. This leaves enough time to navigate flight check-in, security lines and travel to the gate.
DIA also recommends that passengers download their free FlySmart travel app for the Blackberry, iPhone and Android devoices. The FlySmart Airport travel app has live updates and content from www.flydenver.com, according to DIA airport officials.
It isn't rare for flights to be cancelled due to weather related issues. However it is rare for cancellations due to snow to occur in mid-April.
