Jenna Bush Hager gave birth to her first child, a daughter, on Saturday.
Former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush released a statement announcing the news about their new granddaughter.
"Laura and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our grandchild, Margaret Laura 'Mila' Hager," the new grandparents wrote, adding that the new baby was named for her grandmothers. "She was born last night [Saturday], April 13, at 8:45 p.m. in New York City."
"We met our beautiful granddaughter today," the added. "Jenna and Mila are healthy and our family is elated."
The 31-year-old Hager announced her pregnancy in December, saying she "nervous and excited." The new daughter is the first child for Hager and her husband, Henry, as well as, the first grandchild for the former president and his wife.
"I'm a first-time mom, but it's something I've always wanted," she said on NBC's "Today Show," where she works as a contributor. "I'm a teacher and I love kids."
Hager and her husband made a joint appearance on the show, where they discussed the pregnancy and Hager stated that his wife would "instill wonderful values" in the baby.
Former president Bush and his wife also phoned in to the show during the appearance. He said he was "fired up" about becoming a grandfather, but expressed reluctance at the idea of changing diapers.
"I'll be the guy in the Ford 250 driving around the ranch with the grandchild," said George W. Bush. He just needs a tiny cowboy hat for the baby to complete the picture.
Jenna Bush married Henry Hager in 2008 in a ceremony on the Bush family ranch, which is a 1,600-acre property in Crawford, Texas.
At the end of this month, former president George W. Bush, who served as the 43rd president, will open his presidential library, which will be set on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
