Carnival Fascination Cruise Ship Fails Health Inspection

Carnival is taking yet another hit. A Carnival ship failed a health inspection recently after inspectors found things like live flies, dried food waste and a "roach nymph in places where they shouldn't have been.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program released a report this week on the Carnival Fascination. The ship received a score of 84 during a recent inspection based on a 100-point scale. Anything below 86 is a failing grade.

The inspection took place on Feb. 21. Inspectors found several violations which included an insufficient amount of chlorine in the onboard water park, salad bar items not protected by a shield and not enough lighting in food-areas to ensure thorough cleaning.

However those violations were tame compared to what else was found, like insects.

"At the hamburger grill, there was a large fly around the uncovered raw hamburger patties. The area was open during the inspection," the report said, according to USA Today.

Dried food waste was found under a kitchen counter. "It appeared that the food waste was leaking through the sealant. A small fly was in this compartment," an inspector said.

Four to six flies and an immature cockroach was found near the deck drain below the juice dispenser.

According to Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen, it is rare for Carnival ships to fail inspections.

"In the past five years, no Carnival ship has failed a U.S.P.H [U.S. Public Health] inspection and the fleet's average score during that time period is 97. The average over 20 inspections already conducted in 2013 is 97.2," Gulliksen told USA Today.

According to Gulliksen, "corrective action was taken immediately, with several issues being resolved during the inspection and all issues resolved within 24 hours of the inspection."

Carnival is looking forward to having the ship re-inspected.

This incident comes after several problems on Carnival ships in the past two months. In February, the Carnival Triumph was let adrift when an engine room fire knocked the power out. Passengers were subjected to horrendous conditions for several days as they were towed back to a port in Alabama. Recently the ship broke away from the port due to high winds.
