A family claims that they were removed from a United Airlines flight after parents complained about a violent movie that was being shown on the flight's television screens.
Some unidentified parents were upset when their children were shown the PG-13 rated "Alex Cross" movie on board. The parents claim that they shouldn't shelter their children from seeing the violent movie because it was being shown on all of the drop-down TV screens on the United Airbus A320.
The parents asked the flight attendants if they could possibly turn off the screens in their section of the plane but they were told that this couldn't be done.
"We asked if the captain has the authority to address this issue, but received no response," the family says in a recount of their trip posted on the website of The Atlantic. "A few minutes later we asked for the captain's name (I failed to make note when he welcomed us on the PA system), and was told, by the purser, that we will have to ask him ourselves when we disembark."
The parents said that they were very polite and cooperative when interacting with the flight crew members, but their requires got them booted from the plane.
An hour after their request, the captain made an announcement over the intercome that the flight was being diverted to Chicago O'Hare due to a "security concern."
"After landing, a Chicago police officer boarded the plane and, to our disbelief, approached us and asked that we collect our belongings, and follow her to disembark," the family told The Atlantic. "The captain, apparently, felt that our complaint constituted grave danger to the aircraft, crew and the other passengers, and that this danger justified inconveniencing his crew."
United Airlines confirmed that this incident did occur and they released a statement to Today in the Sky, saying "United flight 638 from Denver to Baltimore diverted to Chicago O'Hare after the crew reported a disturbance involving a passenger. The flight landed without incident and the customers were removed from the flight. We reaccommodated the customers on the next flight to Baltimore and have since conducted a full review of our inflight entertainment."
