10 Places to Go While They're Still Cheap

Travel is so expensive that it's easy to forget that there are still places that are affordable and worth visiting. Here are a few destinations that are not only wallet-friendly, but still have lots to offer to travelers:

Tasmania, Australia

This location was on two major travel lists this year, TripAdvisor's Travelers Choice 2012 Destinations on the Rise and Lonely Planet's Best In Travel 2013. This attention may raise prices in the future, but for now, travelers can enjoy the waterfront, with cafes and shops, and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. There is also a culinary scene with a growing reputation.

Ukraine

Travelers can explore Ukraine for under $50 a day. The country has more appeal than just that, however, being the location of UNESCO World Heritage sites that are still relatively uncrowded.

Nicaragua

Nicaragua has gained political stability recently, and with the ancient ruins, expansive jungles and sunny beaches, the country will likely gain in popularity. That popularity will likely bring price increases, making now an opportune time to visit this country's natural beauty.

Sri Lanka

Lonely Planet calls Sri Lanka spectacular, affordable and still mostly uncrowded. It was named one of their top picks for the best of travel in 2013. It also is home to a surprising number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Even the surfing is good!

Croatia

In July, Croatia will be joining the European Union, which will help them finance more tourism infrastructure. They won't be adopting the euro right away, so travelers will not yet face the increased prices that will accompany that change. Croatia is also available as a stop on the Eurail Pass.
