Airport travel and convenience are not words that go together well. The way you dress when traveling can help improve the experience, making it more expedient and less of a production.
It's important to keep in mind both what's best for passing through airport security, as well as, what works best on the plane. This means keeping in mind varying temperatures, changes in altitude and the fact that you will be sitting still for long periods of time.
Layers are a good recommendation, because they usually are comfortable, and allow for you to change easily to suit whatever temperature your environment is, especially if you are traveling between areas of different climates. When you have to deal with a warm airport terminal, a cold cabin during flight, and whatever temperatures are in your departure and arrival destinations, there is really no alternative to layers that allows you to remain comfortable.
Good choices for layers include a tank top, short or long sleeve cotton shirt, either a warm sweatshirt or sweater duster and if you will be in a winter climate, a warm winter coat. A scarf is also a good idea, because it is a light adjustment for small variations in temperature that can be worn with a shirt as well as a coat.
Looser clothes are better because you will be wearing them for a long time, and the pressurized cabin can cause circulation problems, which is why walking around during the flight is always recommended. Tight clothes will exacerbate that problem, and will also likely become very uncomfortable after a long flight.
Footwear is another important consideration. Airport security requires removing shoes, so you don't want anything too complicated to take on and off, but it is also important to consider comfort, as you may have to do a lot of walking among terminals. Sneakers or flat shoes are recommended, especially for long flights.
A great comfortable flat is Toms, as you don't have to worry about them falling off or giving you blisters and a pair of shoes is donated for every purchase.
If you are bringing boots to your destination, it's recommended to wear them on the plane because they take up a lot of space in your luggage and can make your suit case heavy, making transporting it more difficult and bringing the weight closer to the limit. Then, remove them during the flight and make sure you have comfortable socks or bring a change of comfortable flats to wear on the plane.
