Boxer Robert Guerrero Arrested For Gun Possession at JFK Airport

Boxer Robert Guerrero was arrested at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Thursday after attempting to board a plane with a handgun in his bag.

Guerrero is set to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 in a big event at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas which will be featured on Showtime pay-per-view. However he got into a bit of trouble recently after he was caught trying to bring a gun onto a Delta flight headed to Las Vegas, Yahoo reports.

The gun was not loaded and Guerrero didn't have any ammunition on him. There are varying reports on what type of gun the boxer had. The New York Post reported that the gun was a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic while the local NBC affiliate reported the gun was a 9 mm Smith & Wesson.

Guerrero was in New York to promote the upcoming fight. The status of the fight following this incident is unknown but the arrest likely won't impact it. Guerrero was being held by Port Authority police at the airport. The charges against Guerrero are pending.

Luis DeCubas Jr., Guerrero's manager was with him when he was taken into custody but he couldn't be reached to speak about the incident and Showtime spokesman Chris DeBlasio declined to comment.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Guerrero seemed pretty confident over the upcoming fight against Mayweather.

"He's going to see things in the ring that he's never seen before," Guerrero said, according to the Daily News. "And he's going to be shocked. He's not going to know what's going on."

Stephen Espinoza, the executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, spoke well of Guerrero during the press conference on Tuesday.

"We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert, knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual," Espinoza said.
