Nashville to Begin Quicker Security Screening Process for Passengers

Travelers passing through Nashville International Airport (BNA) will now be eligible for TSA Pre. According to the Transportation Security Administration, TSA Pre allows passengers traveling domestically from BNA who are select frequent travelers for American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways.

Members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler programs are also eligible to participate in the new program. The program allows passengers who qualify to pass through airport security faster, by receiving expedited screening at the main checkpoint.

The program works by embedding information in the bar code of passengers boarding pass. The bar code can be read at designated checkpoints, which will sometimes consist of separate TSA Pre lanes. The expedited screening process may include being able to leave shoes on, as well as light outerwear and belts. Passengers will also be able to keep their laptop in its case, and bring their 3-1-1 compliant liquids in their carry on.

"TSA Pre helps us move away from a one-size-fits-all security screening model and closer to our goal of providing the most effective security in the most efficient way," TSA Acting Federal Security Director Ken Meyer said. "By using the information participants provide, it allows us to make an intelligence-driven risk assessment that allows eligible participants to qualify for expedited screening."

TSA Pre is a program developed by TSA to focus security procedures on areas that are higher risk, resulting in enhanced and more effective security.

This is done by focusing security on travelers that the agency has little knowledge of and are considered higher risk. The program includes modified screening procedures for children 12 and younger and passengers 75 and older.

More than 7.5 million passengers have used TSA Pre. By the end of March, it will be available in 40 airports for eligible passengers traveling on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways.

Currently, passengers traveling through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall, Charlotte Douglas International, Denver International, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Honolulu International, Lambert-St. Louis International, Ronald Regan Washington National, Seattle-Tacoma International and Washington Dulles International airports.

Eligible passengers include U.S. citizens flying on participating airlines and members of CBP Trusted Traveler programs. The programs include Global Entry, SENTRI and NEXUS. Canadian citizens that are traveling domestically within the United States are also eligible to take advantage of this program if they are members of NEXUS.
