Razor Blades in Doughnuts: Utah Couple Plants Razors in Pastry for Cash

A couple in Utah have put razor blades in a grocery store's doughnuts and swallowed them in a effort to get a payout from the store.

The New York Daily News reported that Carole Lee Leazer-Hardman, 39, and Michael Condor, 35, are accused of hiding the razor blades in the donuts at Smith's Food and Drug store in Draper, Utah.

The couple worked at a Dollar Store in the same mall as Smith's Food and Drug.

The couple ate a few of the donuts which had the razors in them which ranged from fingernail to thumbnail sized pieces. They went to the hospital and the X-rays showed the blades inside their stomachs.

They even gave one of their co-workers at Dollar Store, who didn't know about the scam, a donut and she suffered cuts in her mouth.

The donuts were pulled from the store shelves as a precaution but they were in tamper proof packaging and shipped from out of state. Officer said they were contacted by the couple who said they had eaten "tainted" food with razor blades in them.

Detectives believed there was something fishy with their testimony and when questioned, Condor admitted to putting the blades in the donut to try and extort money.

"During the course of the investigation we were able to determine that they intentionally inserted these broken razor blades into doughnuts that they had purchased at Smith's and then swallowed the razor blades with the doughnuts," police said in a statement.

They have both been charged with filing a false police report and assault and were booked into Salt Lake County Jail reported Yahoo News.

Smith's is under the Kroger brand of stores. Kroger's website says of the company, "The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is one of the world's largest grocery retailers, with fiscal 2012 sales of $96.8 billion. Kroger's Family of Stores spans many states with store formats that include grocery and multi-department stores, discount, convenience stores and jewelry stores. We operate under nearly two dozen banners, all of which share the same belief in building strong local ties and brand loyalty with our customers."
