There has been a massive cat food recall for the brand Diamond Pet Foods. The pet food company issued a voluntary recall that affects 25 U.S. states.
A press release from Diamond Pet Foods said that certain bags of "Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food" are being recalled after tests concluded that the products might have a low level of thiamine.
Thiamine is essential for cats to maintain healthy nervous system function.
"There have been no complaints regarding thiamine levels, or any other health issues, related to these products. In association with this voluntary recall, Diamond Pet Foods has tested all other Diamond brands for thiamine deficiency to ensure the safety of the cat food it manufactures. No other product manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods is involved in this voluntary recall," reported the press release.
ABC Local reported that symptoms of thiamine deficiency include salivation, decreased appetite, vomiting and weight loss. And in extreme cases neurological damage can occur including cervical ventroflexion of the neck which means bending towards the floor, ataxia which shows in difficulty walking, falling, seizures and circling.
The products were distributed in the following states:Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia."
They are advising that if you have the product, pet owners should return it immediately or throw it away.
"If you have fed your cat with the affected product and notice your cat is not acting right, take him or her to your family veterinarian as soon as possible," said Dr. Amanda German, a senior clinician with BluePearl in Virginia said to ABC Local. "Of course, if it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at any one of our locations."
