The best airport in North America has been named. A global airport organization has named Indianapolis International Airport as the best in North America for 2012.
Airport Council International announced their annual Airport Service Quality awards and with that comes the best airport in North America. Only six airports around the world earned regional honors.
This is the second time Indianapolis's airport was given the honor. It was also ranked the best airport in North America in 2010. Indianapolis beat out Ottawa and Tampa for the top spot.
"The annual awards program identifies the most passenger-friendly airports throughout the world," said airport spokesman Carlo Bertolini in a release. "Results are derived from ASQ's year-round passenger satisfaction surveys conducted in gate areas."
Indianapolis International Airport's top manager said the airport won the award due to the staff members.
"Being the best airport in North America wouldn't be possible without world-class employees," said Robert Duncan, executive director for the Indianapolis Airport Authority, in a prepared statement. "I am proud of their dedication, and I especially thank our front-line staff who greet our guests and keep our facilities clean, safe and operational around the clock."
Airport Council International announced the best airport in five other regions. The best airport in Africa is Cape Town. Seoul Incheon has the best airport in Asia-Pacific. Europe's best airport is Moscow Sheremetyevo. In the region of Latin America-Caribbean, Cancun was named the best airport. Abu Dhabi's airport was named the best in the Middle East.
Indianapolis International Airport is 16 minutes from downtown Indianapolis. The airport averages 141 daily flights to 33 nonstop destinations on eight major airlines and enjoys fares below the national average. In 2011, approximately 7.5 million passengers flew to or from IND.
The ASQ Awards were created in 2006. The choose the best airports based on customer satisfaction surveys.
