Chinese Airline to Sell Cars Through In-Flight Shopping Catalog

Love flipping through the in-flight shopping catalog while on a plane? The catalog might be expanding in big ways. One airline is considering adding real cars to its in-flight shopping catalog.

If you're looking to buy a car, in-flight shopping might make that very convenient as Chinese carrier Spring Airlines will soon be adding a selection of cars to its in-flight shopping catalog, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reports.

"We have been in talks with a wide range of mainland car makers for a long period of time," Spring Air spokesman Zhang Wuan said according to SCMP. "Many technical issues needed to be implemented before we roll out car sales on board."

The airline will start allowing passengers to purchase the vehicle that they want starting in April. Passengers will simply use their credit cards to make payments on the car.

However buying a car is a huge decision and buying one comes with a lot of questions. The airline is finding it to be a challenge to train their 500-plus cabin crew about the different models of cars that are offered so they can effectively promote and sell them in a professional way.

Another concern that the airline has is if passengers will actually pick up on this idea. Selling vehicles on a plane is different in that the buyer won't be able to check out the actual car or take it for a test drive before deciding to purchase it at 35,000 feet.

According to SCMP, the first vehicles that will be available will be priced at 100,000 yuan (US$16,000), which is a price that Spring's passengers are expected to be able to afford.

It is not clear how the car would be delivered to the buyer. It is also not clear what brands and makes will be available and if flight attendants will get commission on the cars that they sell.
