This isn't the first time someone was killed by a wave. In January, a man named Charles Francis Quaid died when a wave snuck up on him. He was walking along the beach on the Point Reyes National Seashore with his wife and dog on New Year's Day when his wife and his dog were knocked down by waves that had snuck up on them.
Quaid was able to help his wife, but when he was trying to help his dog, he was knocked down by a series of waves and was swept out to sea. His wife survived the incident but Quaid was pronounced dead.
Later in January, a woman was swept out to sea by another large wave in Northern California. She was walking along the beach with her boyfriend and her dog when the incident occurred and later drowned, making it the third incident of its kind this winter in California.
In November, a couple when they were trying to save their dog who got pulled into the ocean by large waves.
These waves in these incidents are called sneaker waves as they suddenly rush ashore without warning.
