Why MUM's NOT HOME is Worth the Visit When in Hong Kong

When it comes to food, Hong Kong doesn't fall short with its number of options.

From iconic streetside hole-in-the-wall restaurants to Michelin-starred establishments, there are so many to choose from that sometimes, it can get overwhelming. It can also lead avid foodies to look for Hong Kong's best-kept secrets instead, particularly restaurants and cafes not many people know of.

One such place is known as MUM's NOT HOME.

Located along Shanghai Street in Yau Ma Tei, MUM's NOT HOME is not easy to find. This writer, her husband, and her sisters got lost trying to find it during a trip last March despite the assistance of Google Maps. Here's a hint: you won't find a storefront along Shanghai Street.

Once you do find it, you will find yourself stepping into a vibrant, colorful world of mismatched furniture and neon signs opened by owners Chow Kong-chuen and Makui Ma. Almost immediately, you'll realize that there is more to MUM'S NOT HOME than you initially thought. Here's why it's worth a visit.

It's More Than Just a Cafe

While MUM's NOT HOME is a cafe, it is more than just a cafe. It also serves as an art studio where you can get commissions done. And take note, they ship worldwide.

It's also a place where you can buy different items for yourself or as souvenirs for family and friends. These include stickers, rings, and other random knick-knacks. You can even buy clothes in MUM's NOT HOME. Chow Kong-chuen, after all, is a fashion designer as well.

Picture-Perfect Food and Drinks

But if you do come to the cafe for the food and drinks alone, you will find that they are as creative and as colorful as the rest of the place. The menu changes from time to time, keeping things all new and exciting, but you can expect to always find cheesecakes among their offerings.

As of writing, menu items listed on the official website include Peanut Butter and Jelly Cheesecake, Butterfly Pea Lime Cheesecake, and Pistachio Lemon Sponge Cake. Among the drink options you may find on the menu during your visit are Pineapple of the Sea Soda, Secret of Butterfly Pea Tea, Sweet Purple Potato Latte, and Hazelnut Chocolate Latte.

A Safe Place for Everyone

Ultimately, MUM's NOT HOME is a place that is a safe space for everyone who visits. Whether you want to just sit around and drink a latte or you want some space to work on your art or your thoughts, you are welcome at MUM's NOT HOME.

The delightful, creative mismatch that make up the place makes anyone feel that they fit right in, no matter where they came from and no matter why they are there for a visit.
