Tourists sometimes overlook the city of Cologne thinking that there is nothing to do or see in this German City. That isn't exactly the case. In fact, Cologne is home to the world's tallest twin-spired church in the entire world.
That church is none other than the Cologne Cathedral, which is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also happens to be the third tallest church in the world. Only the Mulm Minster, which is also in Germany, and Ivory Coast's Our Lady of Peace Basilica are taller than it.
Standing outside the Cologne Cathedral, you can just spend hours staring at awe at its architecture. The cathedral, after all, is one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture. It is difficult not to simply gawk at the two spires of the cathedral or stare up at the 19th century decor that adorn the main entrance.
Inside, the Cologne Cathedral is equally magnificent and awe-inspiring. There is much to discover and explore inside, which you should take the time to do during their visit.
Inside the Cologne Cathedral
Everything about the Cologne Cathedral just screams "tall," even on the inside. It can feel daunting to be inside such a place, but there is definitely a majesty about it. It can be described as hauntingly beautiful, if you will.
Don't forget to marvel at and appreciate the stained glass windows that adorn the cathedral. In particular, there is what is known as the Cologne Cathedral Window, which is found in the south transept of the cathedral. Believe it or not, 1,263 glass squares in 72 colors make up the window, which was designed by visual artist Gerhard Richter.

Relics
While there is nothing wrong with stepping inside the cathedral for a quick look and a prayer, it is highly recommended that you take the time to look around inside the cathedral. This is because it is home to a number of relics and treasures, particularly those that are sacred to the Catholic faith.
One of which is the Shrine of the Three Kings, which is located towards the back of Cologne Cathedral. It is traditionally believed to hold the remains of the Three Kings, also known as the Three Wise Men.
The relics of Saints Nabor and Felix, as well as Saint Gregory of Spoleto also rest in the cathedral.
