Judging from photos alone, the Tropical Islands resort fits its name -- sandy beaches, clear blue water and palm trees. Vacationers kick back in swimming shorts and bikinis. Flamingos occasionally pass by, and canaries fly around.
But there's a hidden secret about this "resort" -- it's actually located on the site of a former Soviet military air base in Krausnick, Germany, The Daily Mail reported. Tropical Islands is inside a hangar originally built to house airships designed to haul long-distance cargo. Although it appears that temperatures are skyrocketing inside the "resort," it's actually snowing outside.
A beach, a lagoon, a water slide and an adventure park are also inside Tropical Islands. Resort guests can chow down at many restaurants, attend evening shows and relax in a sauna, according to The Daily Mail.
Visitors who wish to stay at Tropical Islands can experience everything from the basic to the luxury -- including quaint-looking cottages and beach tents.
The Tropical Islands are located in what might be the largest free-standing hall in the world, The Daily Mail reported.
Its maximum capacity is 6,000 visitors per day -- and in its first year, it attracted 975,000 visitors total.
In addition to the thousands of visitors each day, about 500 people work at the Islands, which originally opened to the public in 2004, The Daily Mail reported.
The massive hangar - 360 meters long, 210 meters wide and 107 meters high, has the potential to enclose the Statue of Liberty.
