Your flight experience is crucial as it is the start of your holiday. And you would likely want to start on a high note. It is important that baggage stays safe and accompanies you to your destination and back in one piece.

During holidays, you can take more of your favourite outfits, then save room for holiday shopping. However, mishaps can happen as checked luggage can incur a fee and even occasionally goes missing en route. Stolen or lost luggage can easily ruin a trip. Sightseeing just isn't as enjoyable when you're on the lookout for your missing bag, and souvenir shopping lacks a certain something without, obviously, money.

Aside from from an airport losing your suitcase and having your luggage tampered with, a bunch of things can go wrong if you don't actively try and protect your luggage. Here are our recommendations:

1. Avoid putting valuables in hold luggage

According to Anna Sant, travel insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, "Look after your high-value items: always carry them with you, for example in your hand luggage."

Keep your cash, passport and credit cards either in a money belt under your clothes or in a smaller day pack that is always with you, or your person on the plane. Take them with you even if you have to use the bathroom,

2. Ensure you insure

In the event that something does go wrong, at least you know you'll be able to recoup the costs of any stolen belongings or medical expenses.
