Some cities are more expensive to fly to. Adding to that the nice hotel, first class flight, food, drinks and fun attractions.
Understanding how much it costs to visit a city, and why, can make or break your travel plans.
Stimulating sights, tastes and sounds in certain urban jungles can come with a hefty price tag. Be warned if you're planning a trip on a budget. If you think the cost of living in your town is too high, prepare to be shook by these expensive cities in the United States:
1. Anaheim, California
You can't really talk about Anaheim without mentioning Disneyland.
Home to Disneyland with its two theme parks and a downtown shopping area, on the surface, Anaheim, sounds like the perfect place to visit with the entire family. Its iconic rides include the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Space Mountain. Line up early to watch the nightly show Fantasmic. Disney FastPass allows you to skip lines.
Anaheim is a major convention destination and is home to major league baseball and hockey teams.
The Anaheim Convention Center is right across the street from the Disney Resort and hosts a number of interesting conventions and shows.
2. Aspen, Colorado
If you're a fan of winter sports, buy one pass and you are good to go on all four mountains in Aspen. But both skiers and non-skiers love visiting Aspen.
In the 1940s, Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke and his wife developed a plan to reinvent Aspen based on four pillars: mind, body, spirit - and skiing.
You can stay at the St. Regis hotel which sits in stately, red-brick splendor in downtown Aspen. It is everything a Rocky Mountain lodge experience should be.
Head to Four Mountain Sports where they'll hook you up with ski and snowboard rentals.
3. Boston, Massachusetts
In 2019, Boston was among the cities with the highest hotel prices. It is a small city that's easily walkable with a booming restaurant scene.
Boston - and New England in general - are known for coastal foods, particularly seafood. Make sure you grab a lobster roll or clam chowder from one of the local seafood restaurants.
You will have to splurge a bit when you catch the New England Patriots at the Gillette Stadium.
The Back Bay area is a great area to stay in: it is close to shopping and great restaurants; the "middle of it all".
4. New York, New York
In 2018, 65.2 million people visited the Big Apple, also dubbed as one of the greatest cities in the world and The City That Never Sleeps.
The average rate for a hotel room on a summer night is about $329. The average domestic rate for a flight in 2019 was $386.81. The most expensive one-bedroom hotel suite in the world can be booked in New York.
People flock to see the sites: the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.
Save up more and have a trip for the books in these cities.
