The Top Destinations For Travel in 2020, According to Airbnb (Part 1)

Winter is coming. Thus comes the inevitable travel itch.

Airbnb recently dropped its list of trending destinations for 2020. These top cities across the world are lesser known and more eco-conscious, based on year-over-year growth in Airbnb bookings.

The list was compiled by comparing year-on-year growth in reservations:

1. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a 729% year-over-year increase in bookings.

According to Airbnb, "This historic gem on the shores of Lake Michigan often slips under the radar. It has a terrific bar and restaurant scene and fascinating cultural attractions that include a Calatrava-designed art museum."

2. Bilbao, Spain

Bilbao has a 402% year-over-year increase in bookings. It is known for its Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. The Guggenheim Museum has been the main catalyst for change.

Winning the European City of the Year in 2018, Airbnb said, "Next year, Bilbao will also become a top destination for sports fans: it's one of the host cities of Europe's most beloved soccer competition" called Athletic Bilbao.

3. Buriram, Thailand

Home to some of Thailand's most treasured Khmer relic, its best known monument is the incredible Phanom Rung complex.

The province has also become a sporting hotspot as 2018 saw the inaugural MotoGP motor racing event at the Chang International Circuit.

The city saw a 383% year-over-year increase in bookings.

4. Sunbury, Australia

According to Airbnb, "Its biggest claim to fame is as the birthplace of cricket's most sought-after trophy - The Ashes."

Airbnb says the suburb of Sunbury is a popular spot with savvy locals thanks to its wildlife, wineries and Victorian-era architecture. Melbourne will be hosting the ICC T20 World Cup.

5. Romania

Romania is known for its pristine hills and ancient rural villages. The country has some of the best preserved virgin forests in Europe.

Many tourists come in search of Dracula, and are rewarded with ghoulishly gruesome stories.

Romania ranks 15th globally when it comes to ecosystem vitality according to the 2018 Environmental Performance Index.

6. Xi'an, China

Xi'an is best known as the home of the terracotta warriors. Numerous historical monuments have earned it the nickname "China's outdoor museum."

A tourism program will be held that will introduce 30 nighttime tour routes throughout Xi'an.

The city is equipped with monstrously large city walls and the delightfully-named Big Goose Pagoda.

7. Eugene, Oregon

This medium-sized city in the Pacific Northwest has made a name for itself as a culinary hub in Oregon.

Eugene has successfully lured eco-conscious newcomers who have helped make the city a hub for the organic food industry.

It will host national qualifying trials in summer 2020.

8. Luxembourg

Because of its enticing historic core, the city of Luxembourg was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994.

Eugene is committed to going carbon neutral next year.

9. Guadalajara, Mexico

Although operating at a slower and calmer pace than Mexico City, it has a wealth of attractions to reward visitors.

Also noted by Airbnb, local government has embarked on an initiative that encourages cyclists and pedestrians to reclaim public spaces normally dominated by cars.

10. Vanuatu

Vanuatu comprises over 80 islands and has the highest density of languages per capita in the world.

It is home to to rugged islands, deserted beaches and stunning Pacific wildlife.
