Phillip Phillips' mother Sheryl Phillips was arrested for a DUI on Thursday.
American Idol winner Phillip Phillips' mother appeared on several episodes of the show last season. Now she's making an appearance in jail following a DUI arrest.
According to TMZ, law enforcement officials said Phillips was swerving across traffic lanes in her van on a road in Albany, Georgia. An undercover police officer pulled her over. After stopping her, the officers suspected that she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Phillips was given a field sobriety test which she failed. She was then taken into custody and transferred to a hospital. Doctors determined that she was well enough to go to jail. She's now being booked in Dougherty County.
A source told TMZ that Phillips' mother and father split up just last week. Phillips is known for having a difficult relationship with his family. When their pawn shop went out of business, he refused to help them. His family was upset that he wouldn't help them after they spent much time traveling to see him perform on American Idol.
The singer from Leesburg, Georgia won the 11th season of the competition and became a chart topper with his song "Home" which sold more than three million copies, making it the biggest debut for an American Idol winner.
The DUI arrest and the split of his parents is an added stress on to Phillips' health issues. He has a congenital kidney condition which causes painful kidney stones to develop in his body. The kidney stones are too large to pass through his body and must be removed.
Last year he had a six-hour surgery to remove some of these painful kidney stones. This was his ninth surgery.
