The erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James has fans clocking to Cape Town, South Africa to visit a vineyard that creates the wine mentioned in the book.
Both Dickens and Jane Austen mentioned South African dessert wine Vin de Constance, but it didn't become as popular until it was mentioned in the sexy "Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy," which is a set of books being called "mommy porn."
When the characters of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele attend a masked ball, Vin de Constance is listed on the menu. This little detail has fans of the book traveling to the Klein Constantia wine estate, 10 miles away from Cape Town, South Africa.
"We're asked every day by people coming into our tasting rooms about the wine appearing in Fifty Shades Darker," Hans Astrom, the managing director of the estate, said according the The Drinks Business. "We were somewhat surprised to discover that Vin de Constance was featured in the book, but as a result many new people are now discovering one of the great wines of the world."
"Vin de Constance has been a favorite wine of Emperors, Kings and authors for centuries. Its romantic qualities were first recognized by Jane Austen, were eulogized by Baudelaire and have now been taken to a new level by E L James."
The wine is now a favorite of several female Fifty Shades fans.
"Thanks to author E.L. James many more people are discovering one of the great wines of the world," Astrom continued.
A bottle of Vin de Constance goes for around $46 (£30) a bottle. It started being made on the Constantia Estate in the late 1660s and was mentioned in several novels.
The wine is created from shriveled grapes which are hand harvested from the oldest winemaking area in the Western Cape. It has a fresh, floral taste with a hint of spice and can age for up to 20 years. It is best served with desserts like crème brulee, candied figs, caramel ice cream and more.
Besides inspiring fans to flock to South Africa to inquire about the wine, the Fifty Shades trilogy has also inspired many hotels to create special packages revolving around the book.
There are Fifty Shades theme packages at the Liberty Hotel in Boston, the Hotel Max in Seattle, and at various Personality Hotels.
