7 Years In Prison Over $2: Decision To Not Pay $2 Train Fare Uncovers Illegal And Loaded Gun

When someone calls another person stupid, sometimes it isn't just being mean or offensive, it could be true.

Take 37-year-old Ruben Sanabria as an example.

Examiner.com reports that Sanabria tried to beat his (Path Train) fare (of $2.25) by hopping over a turnstile to get on the Manhattan subway at the 14th Street station on March 30. Two cops saw what was taking place and quickly grabbed him after he had jumped over the turnstile. It was then that they found a loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson in his waistband. Not only that; he was carrying extras ammunition on his person as well.

It turned out that he was not only carrying a loaded gun, but the gun was illegal (meaning it had no serial number). That is a crime and comes with a second-degree maximum sentence of 15 years, in New York, according to examiner.com.

The good news, he was charged and pled guilty to illegal gun possession in the second degree, not the first, and though he could have been sentence to 15 years, the judge gave him seven years and another 3 1/2 years on parole instead, reported examiner.com.

"This defendant illegally carried a loaded semiautomatic firearm into a public transportation system used by thousands of people every day. Preventing gun violence is one of my top priorities as district attorney, and I will make sure that this office continues to seek strong sentences for crimes involving firearms," said Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr, according to New York Post.

Knowing that he had an illegal and loaded gun in his possession, he decided to draw attention to himself by not paying a measly fee of $2.25, and because of that decision, he will now sit behind bars for 7 years.

The question after reading this story:

Would Sanabria be considered a stupid person?
