A recent survey put out by GFK Custom Research has ranked the happiest cities in the world with some surprising, and not so, surprising results. The global perspective survey calculated happiness based on a number of rankings including: "number of outdoor attractions, shopping centers, performances, amusement opportunities and cultural location," reported The Huffington Post.
Anyone who lives in San Francisco knows how truly happy its inhabitants are. From its laid back vibe to temperate, albeit windy, climate and stellar food and drink scene, it can sometimes feel like the most ideal city in the world. That's why perhaps, San Francisco is the only U.S. city to make it on the list at number 7, and by default, the happiest place in America.
In first place, not surprisingly, is the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil known for stunning beaches and sweeping city views. The city ranked high with its culture and shopping centers and outdoor attractions.
Australian cities also ranked high on the list with Sydney at number two which is seemingly always sunny and beachy and has an abundance of outdoor attractions and cultural locales.
One of Europe's most enchanting cities, Barcelona was high on the list at number three. Barcelona is a city that has it all-culture, the beach, Mediterranean climates, amazing food and a laid back way of life that screams enjoyment. People know how to truly live in Barcelona and all over Spain for that matter making it no wonder why both Barcelona and Madrid made the list. Madrid, Spain's sweeping metropolis came in at number six. With amazing culture, a big-city appeal and lots of shopping and food, the city is stunning in its own right.
Melbourne, another Australian city, came in fifth, known for its artsy vibe. Bike friendly Amsterdam came in at fourth. The city is well-known for its coffee-shop appeal, delicious pancakes and beautiful canals.
Others that made the list include Rome, Paris and Buenos Aires.
