A 9-year-old girl gave birth. You read that right. A baby had a baby.
The Mexican girl, reportedly named Dafne, gave birth to a little girl of her own on Jan. 27, 2013 in Jalisco, Mexico. Dafne and her child are healthy and they're both home, ABC News reports. However the young mother is receiving medical and psychological help.
The little girl was given a C-section. "Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth, the medical team decided a C-Section was the best option" for both mother and child," Dr. Enrique Rabago told ABC.
The baby's 17-year-old father in missing and it might be for a good reason. The father may be charged as a criminal for having a sexual relationship with the girl, even though Dafne claims to have a real relationship with him.
"Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful," sLino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office told ABC.
Dafne claims she was dating the teenager but she won't release any more information about their relationship.
The girl claims that she didn't even know she was pregnant until late in the pregnancy. When her boyfriend found out after seven months, he asked her to move in with him but she refused, so he left town.
Jalisco police are looking for the man so he can tell his side of the story. Jalisco police may ask for assistance from police from bordering states. This could turn into a rape case of child sex abuse.
Dafne comes from a family of 11 children. She lives in the poverty-stricken neighborhood of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos.
Her parents weren't aware of her relationship with the boy since they work all day and were not able to watch over her.
While a nine-year-old giving birth is definitely not common, pregnancy among teens in Zoquipan Hospital, where Dafne gave birth, is. About 25 percent of the pregnancies that the hospital dealt with were among teens.
Shockingly, Dafne isn't the youngest person to ever give birth. In 1939, a five-year-old Peruvian girl gave birth, according to Time magazine.
