The winner of the world's busiest airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.
With the heaviest amount of passenger traffic passing through, Atlanta's main airport may be one you want to avoid, but it might not always be possible.
According to the Associated Press, a total of 95.5 million passengers passed through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This was an increase of more than 3.1 million passenger in 2012, making it the busiest year ever for the airport. The airport handles 2,500 landings and takeoffs a day.
In the year before, 92.4 million passengers used the Atlanta airport, so there was a 3.35 percent increase over a year.
"Hartsfield-Jackson remains the busiest airport in the world in terms of passengers and operations," said Louis Miller, the airport's aviation general manager said, according to AP.
Hartsfield-Jackson, which sees about 250,000 travelers a day, is made to accommodate such heavy traffic. Many of the passengers are there to connect to another flight. The airport offers 125 eateries, 90 retail outlets, businesses that rent small rooms with a place for passengers to take a nap and even an area for pets to do their business.
There was particular increase during the month of December. December's passenger traffic increased by 3.19 percent from 7.21 million in 2011 to 7.44 million in December 2012. Aircraft operations also increased during this time.
While the airport saw an increase in passengers, it had a 2.5 percent drop in air cargo. It went from 663,162 in 2011 to 646,481 metric tons in 2012. This showed a decrease in consumer spending and a decrease in manufacturing.
